6 Ways to Avoid Getting Sick This Season
Flu season is here.
With our body being exposed to a plethora of bacteria, toxins, cold weather and lack-o-sunshine, this season makes our immune system work overtime.
Real Life But Better is about feeling great. Here are some ways to give your immune system (and yourself) some love and extra protection this season!
#1 STRESS LESS
Have you ever heard of the saying “stress makes you sick?” it totally does.
When you are stressed out for long periods of time, your immune system takes a huge hit. According to Dr. Mary Meagher,“people exposed to high levels of stress, consequently suffer from dysregulation of the immune system, thereby increasing vulnerability to infections”. Here are some ways you can help manage your stress:
Listen to a guided meditation
Adopt a deep breathing practice
Attend a yin yoga class
Your immune system will thank you.
#2 QUALITY SLEEP
Sleep is essential to any healthy lifestyle! Did you know that more than 30% of adults are getting less than 6 hours a night? No wonder people get so sick every year!
Research into the effects of sleep deprivation done at the University of Pennsylvania found that even short-term loss of sleep has a significant impact on how the immune system functions (Source). Are you not putting in enough pillow time? Here’s what you can do:
1 hour before bed, turn off all your devices with screens, the blue light emitted from devices is very stimulating to your brain and can decrease the amount of ‘sleepy’ neurochemicals
Do some deep breathing to put you in a calm state
Drink a cup of relaxing herbal tea
Read a boring book before bed to lull you into sleep-town
#3 CONNECT, CONNECT, CONNECT
According to Robert Sternberg, an American psychologist, “The emotions that our social bonds evoke are among the greatest forces that affect our hormonal, our nerve chemical, and our immune responses — and through these, our health and our resistance to disease,”.
Being around those you care for releases powerful neurochemicals in your brain that interact with the immune system. Who knew that other people had such a drastic effect on your immunity! Here are some things you can do to experience these benefits:
Spread the love! Complement those around you
Give a loving heart-to-heart hug
Have a meaningful conversation or laugh with a friend
Spend some quality family time
#4 STAY HYDRATED
We’ve all heard ‘drink 8 cups of water a day, it’s good for you!’ but have you ever heard ‘why?’.
Water not only helps oxygenate your blood, it also helps the production of lymph (huge component of our immune system), AND helps us digest our food (relieving things such as gas, bloating and indigestion) all of which have an important part to play in how our immune system responds to threats.
#5 MOVE YOUR BODY!
If you are among the 25% of Americans that are completely sedentary, chances are you’ve heard of how awesome exercise is to your overall health, but how about your immune system? (Source)
You might be thinking ‘Exercise takes so much time!’ Researchers out the University of California beg to differ. They discovered that it really only takes 20 minutes to boost your immune system! (Source). Here are some wonderful ways to move your body:
Dance in your home while doing daily tasks
Do a 10 minute at home workout
Listen to your body (Remember: Intense and strenuous workouts suppress your immune system! Take it slow, quality before quantity.
#6 EAT MORE PLANTS, EAT LESS SUGAR
When it comes to the Immune system, what you eat has a huge effect on whether or not you get sick this season.
If you follow a traditional Western diet, your fridge and pantry is probably nice and full with pastries, cookies, chocolate bars, candy, cakes, pasta, bread and the like...it's common, yet this is immune system kryptonite. Research from the American Society for Clinical Nutrition confirmed that when processed sugar is consumed, it significantly decreased the capacity of the immune system to get rid of harmful bacteria (source).
If you include fresh fruits and veggies in your diet, filled with antioxidants and beautiful immune-boosting nutrients the likelihood of you getting sick goes way down! Other immune boosting foods include:
If in the end you don’t want to get sick but don’t seem to have the time for the above remedies, take a multi-vitamin! Not only do you get stress relieving, immune boosting nutrients, you get a plethora of other benefits too.
A wonderful full spectrum, high potency multivitamin, such as Dr. Daves Monster Muli-vitamin is a great way to help you avoid getting sick this season!
